Difference between add and adhd reddit12/28/2023 Want to share the research you found about adhers not stimming? Everything I’ve read, including a quick Google search I did just now, said the opposite. Or it could rephrase to “hyperactivity & impulsivity AND/OR inattentiveness” to be more inclusive of all presentations & therefore more accurate to ADHD in general. I think this chart would be better if it labelled the adhd side with which symptoms are specific to certain subtypes. That’s why I disagree with it here as a defining non-autistic characteristic bc someone who’s inattentive would say they don’t have that and then might get confused about if they actually have ADHD or might even wrongly consider if they have autism. I’m not familiar with ICD criteria, but the DSM criteriafor the inattentive subtype of adhd is “Predominantly Inattentive Presentation: if enough symptoms of inattention, but not hyperactivity-impulsivity, were present for the past six months” so while impulsivity is required for diagnosing the hyperactive/impulsive subtype & the combined can include impulsive and/or hyperactive symptoms, it’s not a specific diagnostic criteria for all subtypes of ADHD. I’m diagnosed ADHD probably combined but maybe hyperactive/impulsive & might be autistic too (can’t get assessed in my area) so I definitely crave new experiences while also feeling a desire for routine & familiarity, and that’s not a fun combo at all as I’m sure you probably feel too haha Definitely still think the “hyperactivity & impulsivity” isn’t required since according to this small study of adhd subtypes in adults only 7% of adults present with the impulsively/hyperactivity subtype & 62% present as combined, so if we assume all combined experience both impulsivity & hyperactivity, that’s still 31% of ADHDers that don’t experience it so I wouldn’t personally consider that in the top 5 best ways to differentiate adhd & autism, but I do agree now that a desire for new/novel experiences makes sense so thanks again for explaining that in a way that I could comprehend. That was really helpful and informative, thank you so much for sharing!! All or most ADHDers seem to have hyperfixations regardless of subtype, so I would consider that a desire for new/novel experiences and that helps me understand better how that fits. As blogger Autistic Hoya puts it: I don't "have" autism, my dog is not named Autism. We also use identity-first language ("autistic people" not "people with autism") as identity-first language is generally the preference of the autistic self-advocate community. We do not allow surveys aimed solely at parents and caregivers of autistic people, as this subreddit is aimed at autistic people ourselves (and those questioning if they themselves are autistic), not our neurotypical family members and caregivers. Please message the mods first if you have a research or survey request for participants, and we will let you know if we think it is appropriate to post here. We have just established a new rule about research and survey requests. Its creation was inspired by the following twitter thread, which caused countless 'Aha!' moments for undiagnosed autistic adults: This subreddit is for #actuallyAutistic folks to talk about what it feels like to be autistic. So many autistic adults go undiagnosed their whole lives, and a large part of the reason why is that the diagnostic criteria are written in clinical, dehumanizing terms.
